Wow has it been a crazy week! between conventions, shoots, updates comics and events to plan and go to. Its a wonder I’m still standing! But I am, because I must! 

So this posting is all about UPDATES! are you sick of not knowing when the next fun thing from Dogtoon will be coming along? sick of waiting for Facebook or twitter to remind you of new comics, videos and blogs from your fav internet hotspot for all things entertaining? well worry no more for I give you a WEEKLY UPDATE SCHEDULE!  see in years past we where a tad bit haphazard with your updates, when we had them we would post them. No more my friend, no, no more forever! Having the comic on a schedule helps not only me, but our viewing public! and since you folks are a big chunk of why we do what we do we thought it was best to actually post the days things will be coming out. 

Each posts will be made before Noon on its update day, unless otherwise noted:

Thats right! Doug Cowell and the Dogtoon Crew will be running their very own panels! aimed at the art of web video production and story telling, These panels will run throughout the weekend! If you are in the Long Island NY area you should swing in and check them out.

You will also find the Dogtoon Crew at our table in the vendors room! Stop by and say hi!  And, of course Dogtoon will also be present at all the Dreadful panels. Because we just cant get enough of those wonderful steam punks!

As for the art itself, I really had fun with this, I liked having full backgrounds, I loved the slow fade up as Backslash regains conciseness, and I really loved the flashback going to a black and white manga style. it was start to finish fun! This also marks my first 9 panel comic! Okay so some would say a black frame isn’t art… (me about ten comics ago.) so even then its still 8 panels and thats not to bad! I am a fan of this and I know no one else would catch this but Doug reading is my tip of the hat to Danger Mouse, my favorite cartoon as a wee little Doug, when ever he would drive or read or pilot his ship, to save on animation costs no doubt, his mouth would be covered so it was partial nose and eyes. So glad I got to add that in!

Also….. I loved drawing the past Backslash and Doug! hehe

Dogtoon Media will be running around TempleCon  

in Warwick Rhode Island!

This will be the first year of Dogtoon Media at TempleCon Warwick’s premier gaming convention. I will be going along with the Penny Dredfuls of S.S Icarus and I have to say I am really stoked for this shindig! So since the Dreadfuls have a very large presence there I was really surprised when they advised me not to get a table! so say the steam punk bandits, “Its not a convention you want to be tied down at!” and that really peaks my interest.. so of course like any sound research…I started with THE INTERNET! and found so much info on it, and lots of pictures and many of them with the Dreadfuls.

After all this, I find myself a little unsure as to what will be happening at TempleCon for Dogtoon Media, one thing I am pretty sure about though is that I will be having a blast, (and really isn’t that the best thing?) But my thought is to run around and take LOTS of pictures! our last Big convention I was able to make one Video update, Ill see if maybe I can make a few at this one! I am really stoked to see what this convention has to offer! if you’re interested, check the link!

The Penny Dreadfuls

Hey All,

So, the Holidays have come and gone, the dinner parties, the feasting, the drinking and as with many people…..I have a pleasant reminder of how much I enjoyed it, in the form of a semi protruding and rather annoying gut! I feel this is made all the worse by my being a generally skinny guy. Nothing makes
a belly worse then having it on a skinny frame. So as I work to get rid of mine lots of comedic things have happened and I felt a good old comic story line is just what the doctor ordered!

I think I have really gotten my schedule down, (though work is moving me all around gahh!) but I think at this point I will have Monday as my color update, and Wednesday as a line art day. This gives me plenty of time to work out my story lines and color between the Wednesday and Monday update. I also am fervidly using my sketch book to get out story idea’s character notes and overall story arch’s. I really feel sorry for anyone who has to decipher my ramblings. But at least I can make sense of it, and I am really stoked to get this story underway,

A little about the comic story, I really liked the idea of Doug being the butt of a joke every now and again and since I did in fact gain some weight what a great little fact to poke fun at. This story line will of course develop for a few strips to come. So stick with it!

Time once again for a little insight as to the comic that I do. So lets go over it a bit, first off I really did enjoy Avatar, and doing some research into how James Cameron made the movie made me love it all the more. I mean real time motion capture, and re-inventing 3D cameras? MY GOD! the film geek in me experienced a joygasim and a half! That said the reason for the title of the comic “Ferngully + Smurfs + Aliens = Magic” is because thats how I felt walking away from the theater. “Haven’t I seen that basic plot before?” and Yes it felt like someone meshed the afore mentioned movies together but on retrospect, I have tasted cheese before but that does not mean that same cheese mixed with a sauce and noodles wont make a lasagna that is all the better for its combination! So to that I say “WELL DONE Mr. Cameron!”  for so many reasons! and I am glad he won awards for his work! they are well deserving! it is a visually stunning piece that I enjoyed from start to finish! 

So on to the comic itself. Since its no small secret that Doug the Dog is based on me…. if this is news I refer you to our similar names; And when I was a kid, like most kids when I saw a movie or TV show I liked I tried to BE that movie, dressing up, playing pretend and all that fun! Well, as I took on the character of Doug the Dog I basically decided he had to embody some of those youthful and playful parts of my childhood in his semi adult years. To that end, playing Avatar seemed like a fun option. Also coloring him as a Ni’Ve was such fun! and after inking this piece there was no way I was going to let it remain in black and white! At first I planned to have him holding the arrow ready to shoot but found that covered his face too much. So I opted for the “just shot the arrows” look, this also turned out to be more fun to have a few lodged in Backslash’s backpack! I also only drew one panel for this strip, intending the entire amount of dialog to fit in the empty space around the characters. Once I got to the layout stage I really liked the idea of having the scream break up the action more, so I added the second face frame then. For time sake I decided not to go with my first option to fix this which was to redraw a second panel with an angry looking Backslash and a missing Doug, though comical (and that is the intent of this strip after all) Deadlines loomed so I went with the close up on the face instead. 

I really am glad to getting back to full color strips and hope to do a lot more. I have been working out a few story lines that I am really stoked to get under way. New characters, new adventures, and more about the world our Dog House friends live in.
